Before one can watch this movie, one must understand its origin. After the sudden conclusion of Evangelion, fans cried out for a more straightforward ending (doh!). Upset at their disquiet, Anno Hideaki created this blatantly violent movie filled with death. And, as if just to prove he is superior, the movie is capped off by an equally complex ending. Hah!

This movie's plot executes its original purpose, it is very straightforward. It carefully goes through the story of the fall of NERV and humanity; the story
"I'm sad"
slaps Evangelion fans in the face like an 19 wheel mac truck into a Corolla. And when the story seems to have almost reached a conclusion, it sudenly turns philosophical once more (I'm confused). The ending left me about as dazed as the series.

The plot and character development are, as was intended, very linear, but that in no way makes them bad. For once we can actually understand the characters and their motives, joy. However, the ending makes it all worthless. The logic is so circular, you are almost tempted to rip your ears off (unfortunately I was watching with subtitles so that wouldn't have helped). Still, the movie does solve major gaps in the original ending and for that it deserver some praise.

Music and animation were quite mediocre considering that this was a movie. I felt that they could have improved some of the designs instead of recycling old frames. Music - well decide for yourself. There isn't a lot of music to start out with, and there is even less in the movie. If dialogue was music, this animé would have recieved 10/10. But it's not.

Premise wise, this animé's timing was pretty good. Despite the rushed exposition, the story seemed to progress nicely right up to the ending. On that note, watch the ending carefully, you can get a lot of answers from it (or a lot of questions). If you enjoyed Neon Genesis Evangelion, you will enjoy this movie.
